Non Toxic Rain Jackets & Rain Boots For Kids
If you know our family, you know how much time we spend in the rain and snow! Most of our time is spent outdoors and we pretty much live by the quote:
“There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.” Alfred Wainwright
We have searched long and hard to find the best non-toxic and sustainable rain gear brands around the World. Each brand will have its location, shipping availability, materials used, and our favorite picks attached.
You can also use this list to double-check for second-hand finds first! This is our favorite rule as a family “Second hand FIRST” – maybe you’ll give it a whirl! Just search the brand name in your local online thrift shop database and see what’s available.
What makes most rain gear toxic?
The majority of big name brands use Vinyl or PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and DWR (Durable Water Repellent) in their rain gear. These are very toxic additions to any item of clothing.
PVC contains phthalates and lead and is often used in rain gear which allows the fabric to be flexible.
Phthalates in PVC are harmful to the environment and people, especially when it comes to children. Phthalates and DWRs transfer easily to whatever they come into contact with including your children’s clothing and skin.
DWRs repel water and are the most common chemical in rain jackets, suits, and waterproof gear for both kids and adults. DWR is considered a perfluorinated chemical. These are known as forever chemicals that do not break down in nature.DWRs are linked to many health issues including cancer and reproductive effects.
