What do you think of when you hear Black Friday? Coming to my mind are images of people trampling each other, carts full of “deals” and piles upon piles of boxes to be delivered over the coming weeks. And all for what? While we are all driven to shop for different reasons; possibly checking off boxes next to each person we know, obligatory gifts for neighbors for relatives, or maybe the pressure to ‘get the deal’- for a typical shopper, few if any of the purchases made will bring lasting joy to them or the recipient.
To make things worse the statistics around Black Friday shopping are horrific:
- Consumers spent $9 billion dollars online shopping in 2020, up 20% year over year and estimated to be about the same for 2021. (Think about how much debt this adds to the average family!) (Source: Adobe Analytics)
- 80% of all Black Friday purchases in 2020 end up thrown away after only 1 use (if it even got used- can someone say landfill)! (Source: Building a Circular Economy By Green Alliance and Resource Recovery from Waste Program).
We can change it….
Just because this is how it has been, doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. This year we can choose to shop consciously, for only items that are needed. While doing so, choosing to support sustainable brands that are out to do good, and there are many! To shed some light on this overconsuming day (or week) these brands (ones that we love here at SKL) are going above and beyond with giving back to deserving charities! As you make your shopping choices this year, make sure to know where your items come from and what impact they have- with this list, you can make an even more positive impact.
