My hair has been the talk of our little community for a while – it's thick, wavy, and somehow I manage to keep it tame with zero waste hair care. For some reason, this shocks everyone who walks in through the virtual door of the SKL social media pages – and it always makes me giggle!
I will be sharing my personal favourite zero waste shampoo and conditioners below with my secret weapon: The pre-wash oil. Of course, we also had to take input from folks with all different kinds of hair: thin, curly, tight curls, short, brittle, slow growth, sensitive scalp, post part hair loss, etc. No one shampoo can tick off every box, so it's imperative to KNOW your hair and to choose wisely!
I am also going to list my favorite hair OILS. I might make a separate post for this later, but for now I'll just add it here. Rubbing “hair specific” oils through my hair 20-60 minutes before washing has made a tremendous difference in the look, feel, and health of my hair. Give it a go!
The Pre-Wash Oils (Optional)
For 2 years now, I have been “oiling” my hair before washing and it has made significant improvements in the look and feel of my hair. Just amazing results. I always recommend oiling before washing and if you wish to join me, I will simply drop 5 hair oils that I recommend below. All you need is to add 2-3 pumps in the palm of your hand, rub through your ends and roots and then let sit for 20-60 minutes before washing. Wash normally and then style.
In order by price!
- Monoi de Tahini Oil *Bipoc Owned Company* Great for naturally curly and afro hair
- Belle Bar Organic Hair Oil *Bipoc Owned Company* Great to thicken and strengthen hair
- Khadi Ayurvedi Hair Oil *What I Currently Use*

Zero Waste Shampoo & Conditioner
We are extremely honoured to share Nooda with our followers today because the owner has been a long time follower of ours! Laura is her name and creating amazing zero waste shampoo and body wash bars is her game. This is the exact shampoo bar that I featured in our Instagram “Eco-friendly hair care” video that you all loved so much. I used the oily hair shampoo bar and you can just see how much this bar lathers like a champion. My hair dried super moisturised and soft as well – truly the best I have ever tried in bar form!
If you have been an SKL follower for sometime, then you have already heard me ranting and raving about Plaine Products. This is a refillable shampoo/conditioner/bodywash/etc subscription service in the U.S. that I LOVE. Whenever I am back in Chicago, I restart my Plaine Products subscription!
How it works: PP sends you big (or travel size) products in a very low-waste shipping box (all cardboard). When your bottles are empty, you keep the pumps at home and just send back the aluminium bottle. They refill and send back! Genius. This is fantastic for those who are just NOT bar soap/shampoo fans.
Anita Grant *BIPOC owned*
Anita Grant's website is unbelievably amazing for anyone who comes to shop. You can pick and choose products based off of your hair type! When scrolling through the hair care section, I was able to choose from Afro Hair Care, Coily Hair Care, Loose Curls, Curly Hair, and more. Once you choose your hair type, Anita gives you her list of products to buy! You can get shampoo bars (like the one featured below – the Babassu Shampoo Bars), amazing leave-in conditioners, and amazing hair care oils (that I am dying to try!!). Excited to give this site a go!
HiBar has a sort of cult following in the sustainable world and for good reason: their zero waste shampoo and conditioner bars are one of the highest rated out there! I am excited to give them a try and will be sure to update this blog post when I do! These eco-friendly bars gently remove product buildup with added honeyquat and shea butter. Both bars are 100% safe for color treated hair, and contain no sulfates, parabens, silicone, phthalates, or palm oil. Plus, they're packaged and shipped 100% plastic free!
Bohicket Apothecary *BIPOC owned*
I was so excited to find this company – I had never heard of it before! Bohicket Apothecary was created by a passionate woman named Treva who has enjoyed making candles since 2005 and moved over to homemade soaps and shampoo not long after! Every thing on the site is made in small batches and packaged in glass or package free! The photos are just so stunning and I can see how much love and attention went into each product. Excited to try this one too!!
The prices on Bohicket are one of the most budget friendly ($10 USD) in our list and she also offers scent-free options for sensitive scalps!
Another brilliant formulated zero waste shampoo is from Elate Ethical Marketplace (you might know them from our zero waste makeup roundup!). These shampoos are developed with sustainable ingredients which are ethically sourced, vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, and high-quality for you and the planet. You can choose from three different variants for your different hair needs; Balancer, Hydrator, and Stimulator. It also has a conditioner bars! When you order a shampoo or conditioner it will be wrapped in kraft paper which also can be reused!
I have always been a big fan of adding apple cider vinegar to my hair washing routine once a month or so, but I never thought about adding it a shampoo bar. This is genius. ACV makes the hair super soft and clean – it's like a magic potion. I will be ordering this one very soon to try out – the reviews are amazing.
Bestowed Essentials' Natural Apple Cider Vinegar & Citrus Shampoo Bar is different–free of sulfates, preservatives, and other nasty additives. With apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, avocado oil, and essential oils from orange and lemon, this nourishing bar gently cleans the hair and scalp without stripping you of necessary healthy oils.
This shampoo powder is very cool and something I can see myself using when we do our summer camping trips and overnight hikes. All you gotta do is add water! Always been a big fan of Fat and The Moon and excited to add them to this list today.
Last, but not least, on the list is Seed Phytonutrients. This is such a cool company and we are so excited to add them to this list of amazing brands. Deeply nourishing essential oils pair with a light scent of sea salt and bergamot in this natural daily cleanser. You use the shampoo and conditioner as you would normally, and then when finished, simply compost the paper packaging, recycle the inner plastic, and BONUS – there's a packet of seeds inside for you to plant! Ah, I just love it.
And that's all we have for you today! Hope you found your forever shampoo and conditioner bars (and possibly a pre-wash oil?!). Catcha ya next time. *This post contains affiliate links from our most highly recommend brands*
