What toxic chemicals are hiding in most furniture?
Here are some of the main toxic chemicals commonly used in making furniture and the impact they can have on humans:
- PBTE flame retardants – studies have shown that flame retardants have been linked with serious health implications like reproductive issues and impacts to the immune system, and have even been linked to diseases such as cancer and intellectual disabilities like ADHD and autism. Flame retardants are often used in upholstery on sofas and headboards and in mattresses.
- PFAs (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) – nicknamed the ‘forever chemical’ this has the nasty ability to get into your bloodstream and stay there. PFAs are often used in carpets or upholstery to make them resistant to stains.
- Formaldehyde – this chemical is often used in clothing or bedding to make them wrinkle-resistant. Formaldehyde is also one of the main chemicals used in conventional leather production.
- VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) – this includes a huge list of chemicals, each with varying levels of toxicity, but many have been linked to causing health issues like liver and kidney damage, impacts on the central nervous system, and some VOCs are even suspected or known carcinogens.
- Azo dyes – banned in Europe, Azo dyes are used to treat textiles and leather and can cause various impacts from allergic reactions to tumor formations.
- PVC or Vinyl – often used in synthetic leather to make seating. The chemical used to make PVC (vinyl chloride) is a known carcinogen and is linked to increased risks of cancer.
- Pesticides – used on sheep to keep the bugs off them meaning that pesticides end up in any products made with wool.
Is secondhand furniture safer than new furniture?
Over time, furniture tends to “off-gas,” which means they release a lot of the toxic chemicals held within its fibers or materials, so depending on just how old the second-hand furniture is, it may have expelled a lot of those toxic chemicals.
As with buying new furniture, it would depend on the brand. If you see a secondhand piece of furniture from a brand that avoids using toxic chemicals, then it will still be 100% safe. If it’s from a brand that uses toxic chemicals, or if there is no information on the brand, it will likely still be classed as unsafe. When in doubt, try to reach out to the brand for more info (if they are still around!).
What certifications should I be looking for when shopping for furniture?
Here are some certifications to look out for when shopping for your non-toxic furniture:
- Greenguard Gold – includes health-based criteria for additional chemicals and also requires lower total VOC emissions levels to help ensure that products are acceptable for use in environments like schools and healthcare facilities.
- MADE SAFE – completely restricts PFAs and checks for over 6,500 banned or restricted substances to ensure they have been avoided or constrained in a product
- Green Screen – certification requirements include full ingredient disclosure and compliance with a comprehensive list of prohibited substances, including PFAS
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 – they test for harmful substances and make sure that the item of clothing or furniture is harmless to human health.
- Certi-PUR – tests the environmental and human health and safety properties of polyurethane foam used in bedding and upholstered furniture applications.
- GOTS (Global Organic Textiles Standard) – you’ll often see this on organic clothing too and it ensures the integrity of organically produced materials as well as meeting standards for both ecological and labor conditions.
- FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) – signals responsible forestry, fair wages, and the working environment for foresters, and biodiversity is protected.
It’s good to remember that a lot of these certifications can cost brands a lot of money, so just because a brand doesn’t have one, it doesn’t necessarily mean they haven’t met the standard. A lot of smaller brands simply can’t afford it yet!
