Looking for the best eco-friendly Halloween candy and treat ideas for kids in 2023?

We’ve got the perfect sustainably sourced Halloween candy and homemade Halloween treats for you!

From wallet-friendly bulk options that are yummy and low waste to all-natural candy from the world’s best organic brands, there’s something for everyone.

Spoiler alert: These sustainable Halloween treats will attract dozens of trick-or-treaters –you’ve been warned!

Best Eco-friendly & Sustainable Sourced Halloween Candy & Treats for Kids.

low waste Halloween candy

Ah, the sweet crescendo of Halloween night – the promise of delicious treats. 2023 is the perfect time to ditch the run-of-the-mill and opt for the crème de la crème of sustainably sourced candy.

But what’s wrong with our store-bought candy? We hear you ask in frustration. It all boils down to their origin and also to the huge amount of waste they create. Let me explain.

100 Grand, Baby Ruth, Bottle Caps, Butterfinger, Crunch, Everlasting Gobstopper. What do all of these (and many more) brands have in common? They are owned by Nestlé.

Nestlé, among other chocolate manufacturers, has grappled with the pervasive issue of child labor within its cocoa supply chain. The company has faced allegations of turning a blind eye to child labor and inadequate efforts to eradicate this deeply entrenched problem.

Despite pledges to eliminate child labor from its supply chain, progress has been slow, prompting ongoing concerns and calls for increased transparency and action.

The brand and many others have also been implicated in the controversy surrounding palm oil sourcing. Palm oil production often involves deforestation, habitat destruction, and human rights abuses.

Despite committing to sustainable sourcing, criticism persists regarding the adequacy and effectiveness of Nestlé’s efforts to tackle this issue.

But that’s not all – we wish! Halloween treats have another tricky problem.

The U.S. loaded up on an estimated 600 million pounds of Halloween candy last year. This waste takes dozens of years to naturally decompose in landfills. All of one single night!

So, what’s the best alternative? Eco-friendly Halloween candy or homemade Halloween treats for kids.

Opting for low-waste Halloween candy or, even better, homemade treat options help minimize waste, protect natural resources, support ethical practices, and foster a culture of sustainability in the neighborhood. It’s a small but impactful way to contribute to a healthier planet.

What are the most sustainable options for Halloween treats?

For those looking to add a personal touch, homemade treats are the best possible option. Creating your own treats for friends and family allows for customization and creativity and helps reduce packaging waste.

Sustainable-sourced Halloween candy is another excellent choice for conscientious treat-giving. Opt for brands committed to fair trade, ethically sourced, and organic ingredients. These candies prioritize environmental sustainability and fair compensation for workers. By choosing these yummy treats, you actively support companies striving for a more equitable and eco-friendly world.

Another great idea is to purchase candy in bulk! Purchasing bulk candy and using reusable containers or compostable bags significantly reduces waste. Bulk candy stores or sections in grocery stores often offer a variety of sweets, allowing you to curate a sustainable and diverse selection for trick-or-treaters without the guilt of excessive packaging.

For those seeking non-candy alternatives, consider enjoyable and useful treats. Pencils, erasers, small notebooks, or even seed packets for planting can be wonderful options.

Is a sustainably sourced candy in plastic packaging more sustainable than a non-sustainable sourced candy in recyclable packaging?

Sustainably sourced candy in plastic packaging is sourced with environmental and social responsibility in mind. This means that production supports fair wages, ethical practices, and responsible resource management.

However, let’s not forget that plastic pollution can still harm wildlife and ecosystems, and many plastic products end up in landfills or incineration facilities instead of being recycled.

On the other hand, non-sustainably sourced candy in recyclable packaging is made using conventional production methods. The packaging, however, is designed to be recyclable, potentially diverting it from landfills.

While this addresses the waste issue, it doesn’t ensure ethical sourcing or environmentally responsible practices in production. The candy might involve practices like deforestation, exploitation of workers, or excessive resource consumption.

In an ideal scenario, a balance of both sustainably sourced candy and eco-friendly, low-impact packaging would be the most sustainable choice.

However, if a choice must be made between the two options, opting for sustainably sourced candy with plastic packaging is still a better choice to reduce the overall negative impact.

What toxic chemicals are hiding in most candy brands?

  • Artificial Food Colors (AFCs): AFCs like Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 are often used in candies to enhance their visual appeal. Research has associated these synthetic colors with potential hyperactivity and behavioral issues, particularly in sensitive individuals such as children.
  • High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS): HFCS is a common sweetener in many candies. Excessive consumption of HFCS has been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other health issues.
  • Artificial Flavorings: Synthetic flavorings, while approved for consumption, may contain undisclosed ingredients and have been a concern for potential adverse effects, including allergic reactions.
  • Preservatives: Preservatives like butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are used to extend the shelf life of candies. Studies have raised concerns about the potential carcinogenic effects of these preservatives.
  • Partially Hydrogenated Oils (Trans Fats): Trans fats are sometimes present in candies to improve texture and shelf life. Consumption of trans fats is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and other health issues.
  • Phthalates: Phthalates are chemicals that can be found in food packaging, and they may leach into the food, including candies. Research has linked phthalate exposure to potential hormonal disruptions and developmental issues.
  • Lead and Heavy Metals: While not intentionally added, candies can sometimes contain traces of lead and other heavy metals due to contamination during manufacturing or from raw materials. These metals can be harmful, particularly for children, affecting neurodevelopment and overall health.

This blog post is all about low waste & eco friendly Halloween candy & treats.

The Package-Free Halloween Treat Ideas:

Not all Halloween candy needs to come in a wrapper, however, most folks do appreciate the safety of wrapped candy. Every sweet homemade treat deserves a little ghostly dressing! Packaging your treats ensures safety and hygiene. You can use Kraft paper for bags or choose eco friendly food packaging bags or biodegradable bags from Amazon.

The options below are more for Halloween trick-or-treating with family, friends, well-known church groups, playgroups, etc.

1. Freshly Popped Popcorn

From classic favorites to exotic flavors, the choices are bound to make kids’ taste buds dance.

Just make sure to add some packaged bags to keep the treats safe and germ-free!

8. School Supplies!

plastic free Halloween candy

Halloween treats do not have to stop at candy, folks!

You can toss in various pencils (Halloween style, superhero style, glitter style, etc.), erasers, and other small but handy school/art supplies for the kiddos!

Another option? Homemade crafts!

We did Superman pencils, fairy pencils, and gender-neutral pencils last year but we are considering doing homemade crafts this year.

The Packaged Halloween Treat Options:

Non-biodegradable plastic materials persist for centuries, disrupting ecosystems and leaching harmful chemicals. Even the process of recycling plastic can be energy-intensive and may result in downcycling (lower-quality recycled plastic).

Choosing low waste Halloween candy wrapped in sustainable packaging is a great way to reduce plastic waste and teach the little monsters the importance of caring for our planet while sweetening their spooky celebrations.
