Looking for the best cloth diaper brands in 2024? From modern cloth nappies to classic cloth reusable diapers for babies, our list below is chock full of suggestions that are as gentle on the planet as it is on your little one’s bottom.

The Best Cloth Diaper Brands For Beginners (and Pros!) in 2024.

best cloth diapers

Moment of truth: even though we love the slew of amazing organic disposable diapers that are currently available, cloth diapering will always be our top choice. So much so that I’ve personally cloth-diapered my own twins (and plan on cloth-diapering our next baby!) and helped hundreds of new parents make the transition! I promise it’s not as scary as it sounds – it’s truly a lovely experience.

What’s not so lovely are the stats on the disposable diaper industry. Did you know that 18 billion diapers are thrown into U.S. landfills each and every year? Mindblowing!

However, that’s hardly a surprise given that ONE tiny human is responsible for over 5000 diapers in their lifetime.

Now, if you consider that a single-use disposable diaper takes 200-300 years to biodegrade, you’ll quickly realize the amount of waste that’s generated per child. We do have our own selfish reasons, too, if you will. Using cloth diapers will save you approximately $1000+ per CHILD. Yes, you read that right!

After we ran through the numbers (and mind you, we also had disposable diapers on hand for those emergencies or days when we just needed convenience), we saved over $3600 USD with our twins.

Why choose cloth reusable diapers?

Cloth diapers vs. disposable: who is the clear winner? Instead of tossing hundreds of disposable diapers into landfills, you can reuse the best cloth diapers over and over again. That means less waste, less pollution, and a healthier planet for our little ones to explore.

Plus, cloth diapers are way less toxic. Conventional diapers have some scary hidden toxins inside, like dyes, chlorine and phthalates. Not to mention the super questionable “absorbent fluff pulp” that contains dioxins.

Did we also mention how adorable cloth diapers are?! Who could resist those vibrant patterns and stylish designs? On top of that, they come in different sizes and styles to fit your little one snugly, ensuring maximum comfort and minimum leaks.

Speaking of leaks, reusable cloth diapers are leak-busting champions. With clever features like adjustable snaps and elastic leg openings, you can bid farewell to those pesky blowouts and soggy outfits. Say hello to dry and happy babies!

Let’s not forget all the diaper expenses you’ll save as you reuse and wash these gems. Cha-ching!

How to use cloth diapers?

Cloth reusable diapers might sound a bit complicated for first-time users, so here are some tips on how to use these eco-friendly nappies:

  • Prepping: Before using your cloth diapers for the first time, make sure to wash and dry them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This helps improve their absorbency.
  • Diaper Change: When it’s time for a diaper change, start by removing the soiled cloth diaper. During the breastfeeding time (and only breastfeeding), you can toss the diaper, as is, into the washing machine bc everything is water soluble. If formula-feeding or food-feeding, the poop should be flushed before washing.
  • Inserting the Liner: If you’re using a liner or an insert, place it inside the diaper pocket or lay it on top of the diaper, depending on the style you have, for extra absorbency and poop-catching.
  • Snapping or Fastening: Adjust the diaper to fit your baby’s size. Fasten the snaps or use the hook-and-loop closures to secure the diaper snugly around your baby’s waist. Make sure it’s not too tight or too loose.
  • Checking the Fit: Ensure the leg openings are snug but comfortable, with no gaps where leaks can occur. You can gently pull the elastic around the legs to create a better seal.
  • Changing Frequently: Change the cloth diaper every 2-3 hours or whenever it feels wet or soiled. Regular changing helps prevent rashes and keeps your baby comfortable. This also helps the child when it comes to potty training!
  • Storage and Washing: Store the used cloth diapers in a wet bag or a diaper pail until it’s time to wash them. Follow the washing instructions provided by the manufacturer. Typically, it involves a cold rinse, followed by a hot wash with detergent and an extra rinse cycle.
  • Drying: Hang the cloth diapers to dry or tumble dry them on low heat. Avoid using fabric softeners or dryer sheets, as they can affect absorbency.

Are cloth diapers better for the environment?

Absolutely! Cloth diapers for babies are way better for the environment compared to disposable diapers. First and foremost, they are reusable, meaning they can be washed and used again, significantly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. Disposable diapers, on the other hand, contribute to the growing waste problem as they are single-use items. Also, producing disposable diapers requires large amounts of resources, including wood pulp, plastic, and energy.

Cloth diapers, although they require water and energy for washing, have a lower overall impact on resource consumption. To top it all off, disposable diapers often contain chemicals like dyes, fragrances, and absorbent gels. The best cloth reusable diapers are typically made from natural fibers and do not contain these potentially harmful chemicals, reducing your baby’s exposure to them.

How to clean cloth diapers?

Granted, this might seem like a Herculean task at first, but once you learn a few tips and tricks, it’s actually pretty easy.

  • Before washing, remove any solid waste from the diaper (if no longer water soluble, remember: if the baby is only breastfeeding, the poop and pee can go directly into the washer!). You can do this by gently shaking it into the toilet or using a diaper sprayer to rinse off the waste.

Some parents find it helpful to do a pre-rinse or pre-wash cycle to remove excess urine and waste.

  • Set your washing machine to a regular or heavy-duty cycle using warm water. Use an appropriate amount of detergent suitable for cloth diapers. Avoid using fabric softeners, bleach, or detergents with additives that can affect absorbency or irritate your baby’s skin. You can use one of our recommended odor removers here for intense smells.
  • After the main wash cycle, you may run an additional rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue (we did not need to do this).
  • Depending on the fabric and manufacturer’s instructions, you can air-dry cloth diapers by hanging them outside or using a drying rack. Some cloth reusable diapers are safe to tumble dry on low heat. Avoid high heat as it may damage the fabric or elastics. I personally recommend hanging in the sun – it’s a great natural bleacher and odor remover!

What are some cloth diapering tips and hacks for new parents?

First and foremost, ensure that the diaper fits your baby properly. Adjust the waist snaps, leg elastic, and rise snaps (if applicable) to achieve a snug and comfortable fit. This way, you’ll help prevent leaks around the legs and waist.

Consider adding extra absorbency to the diaper for heavy wetters or overnight use. You can use additional inserts or boosters made from materials like hemp or bamboo to increase the diaper’s absorbency capacity.

Using a diaper liner can make clean-up easier and help prevent stains. Liners catch solid waste, which can be disposed of easily, reducing the mess and making it more convenient to deal with.

Change your baby’s diaper frequently to prevent saturation and leaks. Cloth diapers typically require more frequent changes than disposable diapers because they do not have the same level of superabsorbent (toxic) chemicals.

Compression leaks can occur when the diaper is too tight around the legs or when pressure is applied to the diaper, like when the baby is sitting or wearing tight clothing. So, it would be best to adjust the fit to alleviate compression leaks.

Lastly, If you’re using prefolds or flats, ensure you have a well-fitting and waterproof diaper cover. A high-quality cover with good leg gussets and a snug fit can help prevent leaks.
