Have you been looking for the best natural, non-toxic, and zero waste makeup brands out there but keep coming up short and heading back to the ol’ “tried and tested” brands that don’t give a crap about the environment (or you?). If so, you are going to love this list of zero waste & natural makeup – because they HAVE been tried and tested by our community!!
This post is about Zero Waste Makeup Brands
It took me some time to get onto zero waste & non-toxic makeup because for years I kept going back to my “trusted” brands. You know – the ones that we all flocked to based on commercials or promises of “natural” ingredients. Makeup was the last thing on my mind when it came to a sustainable and healthy lifestyle – but I should have been much more careful. The toxins that the most well-known brands can put into our makeup (which then goes directly on our faces and into our skin) are horrendous. It’s almost unbelievable. I have linked all of the information for each ingredient below if you would like to learn more!
What should we look to avoid in our makeup?
- Animal Testing : Opt for brands who do not test on animals (of course!)
- Parabens: Propylparaben and Iosbutylparaben
- Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
- Diethanolamine (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA)
- Butylated Hydroxyanisole
- PEG-10 Laurate
- Palm Oil (Palm oil is often hidden inside and called coconut oil – so be careful!)
- Non-sustainable or non-ethical sourcing
Which Brands Can I Trust?
This is what we are here for! We spent the last 2 months compiling this list of safe, zero/low waste, and natural makeup brands for our community. Many of these brands are very small, sustainable, and built from scratch by folks who want to provide safe and honorable makeup for us. ALL makeup should be safe, non-toxic, cruelty-free, and environmentally friendly. Here’s hoping that one day, this will be the basic guidelines for all makeup and skincare. Here is our guide to Zero Waste & Natural Makeup!
Zero Waste & Non-toxic Makeup Brands We Trust:
1. Vyana Beauty
**This is the zero waste makeup brand that SKL owner, Danielle uses! ** Manufactured in Sweden, Vyana’s products are 100% handmade in small batches to ensure the best quality. Vyana uses the best and finest ingredients the world can offer to make her all-natural, vegan, and zero-waste beauty products that will nourish and heal your skin. They take pride in being a green company and strive to be more sustainable every single day. The mica that is used for pigmentation has a child labour-free certification and is sustainably sourced. This is HUGE. You can also order refills for your makeup.
Ilia cosmetics believes in the skin that looks like skin—and that radiance comes naturally. Their skincare products are designed to instantly revive your look. Produced organically, their brand is vegan and cruelty-free. For sustainability and zero-waste they use TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Box platform that’s dedicated to recycling the hard-to-recycle materials. Ilia has a lot to offer, one of their best-sellers is Cheek + Lip on the go that you can grab for $34. They also have minis (that I just ordered!) that have mascara, tinted lip balm, eye tint, and lip hydrating mask. Sounds awesome right? *Danielle uses their mascara and lipstick!*
“The way you feel on the inside reflects the way you look on the outside, but a little lipstick and mascara help.” This is the favorite tip of Antonym’s founder Valerie (Val) Giraud. She pursued to formulate the finest organic makeup and makeup brushes that are made cruelty-free and gentle on the skin. For many, natural makeup equates to poor quality because of poor pigmentation and color. This is not true of Antonym Cosmetics. They created a makeup line that offers high-quality, professional-level performance without jeopardizing the purity of the ingredients.
Antonym Cosmetics does not test on animals and most of their products are vegan. The only non-vegan ingredient they use is organic beeswax in their lipsticks. Their products are designed, developed, and assembled in the US and then manufactured in Europe. Packaging is made of sustainable bamboo or recycled or FSC (sustainable forest) paper. For bloggers/vloggers out there who do makeups, you may send your information to them so they will send you a product for review. You can have their blushes for $36 – $42, eye shadow palette for $39, mascara for $26, eyebrow pencil and eye pencil for $25 and $19 respectively. They also have lipstick pencils, foundation, different kinds of brushes, and many more. Luckily for us living outside the US, they do ship internationally.
BeeYou Organics is a zero-waste, cruelty-free, gluten-free beauty product based in Washington. They have a lineup of organic skincare products and natural makeup so you can see and feel the difference for yourself. Their products range from $10.99 -$19.99 for makeup and $6.99 -$76.99 for skincare products. They also sell individual packages which will save money and put a stop to wasted, unused makeup.
What makes them different from their competitors is that they don’t use water which is one of the primary ingredients in producing makeup or skincare products. Water as we know can be a breeding ground for germs that can be harmful to our skin. That’s why BeeYou Organics is waterless. By adding water, the efficacy of the product will be lesser so you tend to use more. With BeeYou Organics, you will use less which means less packaging is required. The company uses Zero-waste packaging and they also accept used packaging for reuse or recycling.
Next on our lineup is listed as affordable natural and organic makeup. The owner makes her products in her “facility” in Michigan, which is her spare kitchen. But no worries she assured everyone that her “facility” is free of foods, pets, or anything gross. Her products are mostly organic, completely vegan, and cruelty-free because she didn’t test them on animals, but “on her friends”, as she said.
Clean-Faced Cosmetics are available on Etsy. They have a wide range of products to choose from. What’s awesome is that some products have a dual purpose like the mascara that can be used as an eye-liner and the cheek tint that can be used on your lips also. They do international shipping which is great for us outside the US. I think the cheapest product she has is the Organic Zero Waste Vegan Foundation and Concealer which only cost around $5-$6, but it has a lot of great reviews! This is a must-try brand to those who have a low budget but wish to make the switch.
Dab Herb Makeup & Skincare uses certified organic healing plants as pigments and coloring. That is why you can expect healthier skin, lashes, and lips when you use their products with a slight difference in application. One makeup artist said “Long-wear products are a red flag”, it means these products are full of chemicals that are harmful to our skin and our environment. Dab offers you mindfully made and delicately packaged organic makeup and skincare products. Organic as in 90%-100% plant-based ingredients. Their products are also vegan, and cruelty-free. Amazing right?
Interested in trying Dab? You can grab their products on Etsy. They have a wide range of products to choose from which you can purchase at a great price. Lower price doesn’t mean it is not effective or of high quality. In fact, if you visit their page you will read lots of love from their customers. They also do refilling of their product because most of it is packed in tin cans or glass bottles which are recyclable and sustainable. Ships Worldwide.
Elate cosmetics add a little joy to your ritual. They aim to support you in discovering a beauty routine with sustainable and zero-waste products and ethical marketing. Elate Beauty has sample kits that cost $12 and a beauty kit that has a price range of $34 – $98. Their products are made of 75% organic ingredients.
Elate Cosmetics strives to be organic but they will always choose fair trade when they cannot have both. It is very important to them that the people involved in making their products are treated ethically and fairly. I was super curious about where they source the wood from for packaging. Happy to find out it is Californian Cedarwood certified by PEFC, which means it is certified sustainable and the cap is also sustainable bio-cap. You can also purchase their products here through Earth Hero.
“Kitchen Witchin” is what they do in Fat and the Moon. It is meant to get you stoked and started on a handful of options that will boost your health and bring you joy. Founded by the herbalist, Rachel Budde, who founded her business around providing herbal products to those who are looking for natural and effective skincare and makeup. What I love about them is that they work with plants that are abundant, ethically harvested, and organically cultivated combined with products that are non-toxic and safe for the environment. Curated from “Fat” which is a gift from the seeds and herbs, their products are organic and cruelty-free. The packaging they used is recyclable and reusable.
9. Nudi Goods
Looking for a plastic-free low waste/ zero-waste skincare, cosmetics, and home goods? Nudi Goods is the best place for you. They offer plastic-free and minimal ingredient products at really great prices. As much as they want to be organic, the price would cause their products to be far too expensive for the average consumer. This would violate their principle that sustainability should be accessible to all people, regardless of income. Nudi Goods ships internationally without using any plastic! Their skincare ranges from $13 – $22.50.
10. Plant Makeup
Found this cool brand on Etsy. The brand uses plants for producing makeup. It is a bit different because the shades are lighter, but the good thing is, it is made of 100% PLANTS. The owner started it by making paints out of plants for a school project and then realized she could create makeup! A lot of customers express their love for this brand because of its sustainability, lower price, and gorgeous products. Their price ranges from $10 to $33. This product is definitely a good buy.
11. River Organics
Another amazing brand from Etsy is River Organic. Formulated to hydrate and to be safe for your skin, a husband and a wife curated this makeup line from plant oil. The packaging is a simple paper tube that they ship in envelopes. Aside from selling makeup, they donate to One Tree Planted to help rewild the forest. River Organic also sponsors the Plastic Ocean Project which aims to prevent and remove plastics in the ocean!
