Looking for the best affordable sustainable bra to fit your exact sizing needs?

Tired of having to rely on off-sizes or yucky materials to keep your beautiful breasts happy? Then this is the sustainable bra guide for you!

P.S. If you’re looking for sports bras, don’t forget to check out The 15 Best Non Toxic & Organic Sports Bras For A Healthy Workout!

This post is all about affordable sustainable bras.

Let’s go ahead and say it. Finding sustainable organic bras that actually fit is a Herculean task. I was born with a small breast size: A rather uncommon 30C (with nothing to really fit that C – but that’s what the measurements say haha) and I have been relying on the common sizing of 32B for the last 10 years.

I have to say – even as a small busted woman, the wrong-size bra is absolute hell. In fact, Dr. Erum N. Ilyas, a dermatologist and functional textile expert, points out the numerous side effects of wearing poorly fitting bras.

Spoiler Alert: They can cause everything from chafing, and skin inflammation, to skin tears, bruising, benign skin growths, and itching.

And so, with my team of various breast-size humans, we decided to create this epic guide to stop this madness.

To put together this affordable sustainable bra guide, I had to take recommendations from our writers (ranging from a size 34B to 40G) and a few of our amazing community members who were willing to chat with us about their favorite sustainable bra brands!

Thank you to all of our contributors – you know who you are!

The round-up includes 2024’s best sustainable plus-size bras as well as amazing affordable bras for small-bust and large-bust gals alike.

What makes a bra sustainable?

Unlike most traditional bras, sustainable bra brands take into consideration various factors in their design, production, and materials to minimize their environmental and social impact.

A sustainable bra, made of organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, or other natural fibers, is designed to be durable and long-lasting, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing waste.

Also, most eco undies are shipped in recycled/recyclable packaging to further minimize waste.

Can bras be toxic?

Unfortunately, much like all other clothing, bras can be toxic. Here’s a list of the most well-known chemicals in bras.

Polyester & Nylon

Bras, like most fast-fashion items, often incorporate synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, derived from petrochemicals.

Polyester is known for its durability, but the production process raises environmental concerns. Nylon, while lightweight and strong, also involves energy-intensive manufacturing.

So, due to them being essentially a form of plastic, they also contribute to 35% of microplastic pollution on Earth, which can end up in the ocean.

Azo Dyes

Azo dyes are commonly used in textiles, including bras, to impart vibrant colors. However, certain AZO dyes can break down into aromatic amines, some of which are recognized as potential carcinogens.

Formaldehyde

In textiles, including bras, formaldehyde may be used in finishes to prevent wrinkles and shrinkage. Formaldehyde is a known irritant and allergen, and its use in clothing has raised health concerns.

Flame Retardants

Flame retardants may be applied to bras to meet safety standards. While these chemicals aim to reduce flammability, concerns exist about their ability to cause endocrine and thyroid disruption, immunotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, cancer, and adverse effects on fetal and child development.

Antimicrobial Treatments

Bras may undergo antimicrobial treatments using agents like triclosan or triclocarban. These chemicals have faced scrutiny due to environmental persistence and potential health effects.

Metal Components – Nickel & Chromium

Metal components like underwire in bras may contain nickel or chromium. Nickel is a common skin allergen, and some individuals may experience irritation or allergic reactions.

What are the best materials for sustainable bras?

Organic Cotton

Organic cotton is a natural and breathable fabric cultivated without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Its production minimizes environmental impact, promotes healthier soil, and offers a comfortable feel against the skin, making it an excellent choice for sustainable bras.

Bamboo

Bamboo fabric, derived from the fast-growing bamboo plant, is soft, moisture-wicking, and naturally antibacterial. The material’s sustainability lies in bamboo’s rapid growth, minimal water requirement, and the luxurious silky sensation it provides, making it an eco-friendly option for bras.

Hemp

Hemp, a durable and versatile fiber, is derived from the hemp plant. Known for its minimal need for water and pesticides, hemp is an environmentally friendly choice for bras. Its durability ensures longevity, contributing to a sustainable wardrobe.

Tencel (Lyocell)

Tencel, a type of lyocell fabric sourced from wood pulp, often eucalyptus trees, is produced in a closed-loop process. This sustainable material requires less water, offers a soft and silky texture, and is an excellent choice for comfortable sustainable bras.

Modal

Modal, a type of rayon derived from beech tree pulp, is sustainably sourced and requires less water than cotton. Known for its luxurious feel, modal is an eco-friendly choice for bras that combines comfort with environmental responsibility.

How to find the right bra size?

Finding the right bra size is crucial for comfort and support.

First, use a soft tape measure to measure around your rib cage, just below your bust. Ensure the tape is snug but not too tight.

Round the measurement to the nearest whole number. If it’s even, add 4 inches; if it’s odd, add 5 inches. This gives you your band size.

Now, wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your bust, making sure it’s parallel to the ground. Round this measurement to the nearest whole number.

Now, subtract your band size from your bust measurement. The difference corresponds to your cup size:

  • 1 inch: A Cup
  • 2 inches: B Cup
  • 3 inches: C Cup
  • 4 inches: D Cup, and so on.

Combine your band size with your cup size to get your final bra size. For example, if your band size is 34 inches and your bust measurement is 36 inches, your bra size would be 34B.

How often should you replace your bras?

Bras worn regularly for day-to-day activities typically last about 6 to 12 months. The elastic fibers in the band and straps can lose their elasticity over time, affecting the bra’s support.

Bras reserved for special occasions and worn infrequently can last longer, potentially up to 24 months or more. However, proper care is still essential.

If the band rides up or feels loose, and the straps don’t stay in place, it may indicate a loss of elasticity. Make sure to check for stretched-out fabric, fraying, or underwire poking through. These signs suggest it’s time for a replacement.

How do I properly care for a bra?

Sustainable bras have a very long lifespan – but only if you properly take care of them.

Handwash your bras with cold water and your favorite eco-friendly detergent. Let them sink for a while and then rinse them out and air dry them.

Heat is elastics’ worst enemy, so let your dryer rest – we don’t need it. Repeat the process every two to three wears.

This post was all about affordable sustainable bras.
