Looking for the best sustainable fashion brands that don’t require us to follow each and every passing fad in order to stay relevant? We made a list of the best slow fashion brands and affordable non-fast fashion brands on a mission to dress us with intention.

This post is about the best sustainable fashion brands of 2023.

It’s no secret that we love proposing surprisingly effective ways to quit fast fashion here at Sustainably Kind Living. Heck, we even made round-ups of 20+ fast fashion brands to avoid at all costs on top of rounding up the many reasons why sustainable fashion is so important in the first place.

But what about rounding up the most amazing sustainable fashion brands that deserve our sartorial vote? We have seen so many sleazy greenwashing examples in the fashion industry, that we can positively smell them from miles away.

That’s exactly why we decided to look high and low for the most sustainable fashion brands and affordable non fast fashion brands 2023 has to offer.

Aside from going all Inspector-Gadget trying to vet and verify their eco-conscious claims – sustainability certifications, ethical working environments, low-waste manufacturing pledges, donations– we also took into consideration inclusivity, diversity, and community empowerment.

Sustainable, Size-Inclusive, Diverse: Universal Standard

Turns out, finding the best sustainable fashion brands on the eco market isn’t an easy-breezy task after all. Not when the biggest fast fashion brands continuously try to shift the public’s perspective in an effort to appear “greener” or more ethical. Because, in reality, there is no such thing as a “sustainable fast fashion brand” – as some try to claim.

Eco-friendly apparel made from recycled materials doesn’t make companies sustainable. Donations and carbon offsetting are just easy ways to persuade consumers that they are trying to do good. Fast fashion brands will always strive to have a fast turnaround, maintain unethical working environments and produce awful amounts of waste.

And that’s exactly why they will never be able to rival the values and ethics of slow fashion brands.

What brands are not considered fast fashion?

Fashion brands that are not considered “fast fashion” are the ones that take into consideration every aspect of the entire manufacturing process including the sourcing of raw materials, transportation, manufacturing, and distribution.

Sustainable fashion brands use eco-materials like organic cotton, hemp, recycled polyester, and regenerated nylon, as well as cellulosic fibers. Instead of relying on sweatshops, they work with skilled artisans who are guaranteed a living wage locally or abroad.

Unlike fast fashion companies, slow fashion brands create timeless, durable, and versatile staples that can be worn for years and are meant to be passed down. Lastly, they also use recycled or recyclable packaging and usually offset their carbon emissions in various ways.

What are the best alternatives to fast fashion?

If you are looking for fast fashion alternatives, we recommend choosing second-hand clothing instead of new clothing. This way you’ll expand the lifetime of a garment and save many natural resources. Also, you can have clothing swaps with your friends and family members as well as alter ill-fitting clothes that sit, unused, collecting dust in your wardrobe. Lastly, you can browse our list of the best sustainable fashion brands to find amazing slow fashion options for your capsule wardrobe (you can also use our list to search for sustainable brands secondhand!).

What are the most affordable slow fashion brands?

Slow fashion brands have a bad rep for being expensive. However, our list of affordable non fast fashion brands is proof that sustainability and affordability can co-exist. Some fantastic inexpensive options are Organic Basics, Tentree, Girlfriend Collective, Honest Basics, Kotn, Pact, and Mighty Good Basics.

It’s very important to understand that the initial cost of fast fashion clothing vs the initial cost of sustainable fashion clothing is going to differ. But the cost per wear is what we need to seek if we are truly aiming for affordability. Is something affordable if it costs $10 but only lasts a few washes vs a shirt that costs $40 and lasts years and years – and never loses it’s shape?!

This post is about the best sustainable fashion brands.
