Lyocell fibers

Amidst the list of amazing innovative textiles, TENCEL certainly reigns supreme. But what is this eco-chic fiber that has us all in a quiver with excitement every time we hear a brand launching a new 100% Tencel clothing collection?

We previously put together the ultimate Tencel guide to answer all your most-asked questions about this beloved fiber. But we will break it down (in short!) for you below with our most asked questions on Tencel.

What is Tencel?

TENCEL is the name of the homonymous brand that is owned by Lenzing AG

The company produces semi-synthetic fabrics from natural threads. Tencel is essentially wood pulp – eucalyptus, beech, birch, and spruce trees – that is spun into yarn. Much like Viscose, Tencel is a type of rayon. While the raw materials are natural, the finished fabric is technically man-made and thus it’s called regenerated cellulose instead of simply “natural” or “synthetic.”

There are two prominent regenerated cellulose fibers:  Lyocell (aka Tencel) and Modal. Both fibers are manufactured by the same company and share very similar characteristics. While Modal is also made from wood pulp with closed-loop production, the process is a bit different than lyocell. The texture is a bit more delicate and feels softer. That’s why it is usually found in lighter clothing.

Is Tencel easy to care for?

Although each 100% Tencel clothing comes with its own washing and caring instructions. Tencel is generally very easy to clean, pack and care for. It’s naturally wrinkle-resistant and quick drying. You can use a washing machine (the delicate program) or handwash it for extra safety. It would be best to avoid using bleach or harsh stain removers.
