Looking for the best electric kitchen composter to turn food scraps into nutrient-rich dirt while reducing household waste?
Whether you’re trying to minimize your carbon footprint, enrich your garden, or simply stop tossing food in the trash, an indoor electric composter is an easy and efficient solution.

Cooking at home is a great way to save money and eat healthier, but it also comes with one major downside—food waste.
Every day, vegetable peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, and leftovers pile up, often ending up in landfills instead of being repurposed.
Contrary to popular belief, food scraps don’t break down in landfills the way they do in nature. Instead, they release methane gas, a major contributor to climate change.
That’s where electric composters come in!
SKL top picks, in a nutshell…
- Best All-Around Electric Composter: Lomi 2
- The Top Budget-Friendly Electric Composter: Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50
- The Best Compact Electric Composter: FoodCycler® Eco 5™
- The Electric Composter with the Largest Capacity: GEME
These smart devices quickly break down food waste, using heat, aeration, and grinding technology to create nutrient-dense compost in just a few hours.
Unlike traditional composting, which can take months, an electric composter works overnight, requires no outdoor space, and produces virtually no odor.
So which electric kitchen composter is best for your needs?
Below, we’ve rounded up the top-rated, most cost-effective options for 2026, whether you need a compact countertop model, a high-capacity system, or a budget-friendly alternative.
What can I compost in an electric composter?
Most electric composters can handle a wide variety of food scraps, including:
- Vegetable and fruit peels
- Coffee grounds and tea leaves
- Eggshells
- Small amounts of dairy, meat, and fish bones (varies by model)
- Cooked leftovers
- Stale bread and grains
Some composters even process biodegradable plastics, paper napkins, and coffee filters—just be sure to check your device’s compatibility list.
How long does an electric composter take?
While the timeframe depends on the model, electronic kitchen composters usually take less than a day to turn waste into dirt. This is amazing given that traditional composting can last a month to over a year.
The Lomi 2 kitchen composter, for example, comes with an eco-express mode that can finish the composting process in as little as three hours. Other stellar devices like the Vitamix FoodCycler FC-50, need up to 8 hours to compost.
Do electric composters smell?
No! Unlike traditional compost bins, electric composters come equipped with carbon filters and advanced odor control technology to eliminate unpleasant smells.
How much electricity does an electric composter use?
Most models are energy-efficient, consuming about the same amount of power as a small kitchen appliance or a desktop computer.
On average, they use 0.5 to 1.5 kWh per cycle—far less than a conventional oven or dishwasher.

My Personal Review
The Lomi came in great eco-friendly packaging with clear and simple instructions. The Lomi is not too big, but definitely not small – it will take over a good amount of space on the counter.
We were able to start testing the electric kitchen composter immediately – after an extremely simple setup. Our first batch of organic waste included eggs, meat scraps, the Lomi “plastic” bag, watermelon skin, and a lot of veggie scraps.
We ran the 16-hour test first (for rich, fertilized dirt) and it worked perfectly. The dirt went straight into our garden without a hitch.
The second test was the 3-hour compost – where we tested veggie scraps, fruit skins, and small fish bones. Another perfect batch – but this time the dirt was a lot drier.
Overall, greatly satisfied and looking forward to years of easy indoor composting.

How does using kitchen electric composter compare in terms of carbon footprint to my local government plan who collect separated food waste from the kerb and process it in anaerobic digestion vat, collecting the methane to generate power and selling the compost gor farmers?
In other words, does electric kitchen composting have any advantage for me other than having my own compost to use on the garden? Especially because I am spending my own electricity to make it.
Hi Joy! We highly recommend sticking with backyard composting or community composting if that is available to you. Electric composters, in our opinion, should really only be used as a last resort for folks who live in cities or areas who do not offer composting options. While the electric composter is wonderful (we loved testing it out), we still would much rather compost in our backyard bin. It’s a lot cheaper, more sustainable, and we do not have to think about replacing filters, etc.
Hi, Can we just toss the contents of all the ones you tested onto our various flowerbeds and work it into the soil, or are there other steps we might have to take with some of them?
Thanks,
April
Hi April!
Thanks so much for your thoughtful question! 🌿
Yes — in most cases, you can toss the contents of the electric composters we tested directly onto your flowerbeds and gently work it into the soil. The end result from these machines is more of a pre-compost or soil amendment (sometimes referred to as “composted dehydrated food waste”) rather than fully matured compost.
That said, here are a few things to consider:
Let it rest (if possible): If the output is still warm or has a stronger odor, let it sit for a few days in a ventilated container or outdoor bin before applying to your garden. This gives any active microbes or remaining heat a chance to calm down.
Use it as a soil amendment: The material is best mixed into the top few inches of your garden beds, rather than sitting on top like mulch. This helps nutrients integrate and minimizes any attraction for pests.
Avoid direct contact with seedlings: Because it’s not fully cured compost, avoid placing it right at the base of young or delicate plants. Established flowerbeds will handle it beautifully.
Check the manual:
A few electric composters may process tougher items like meat or bones, which I don’t recommend applying straight to garden soil unless you’re confident they’ve fully broken down.
So in short: yes, you can use it in your flowerbeds, just work it in and let it breathe a bit if needed. It’s a fantastic way to close the loop in your home and nourish your soil naturally. Let me know if you’d like a few tips on using it for veggie gardens too!
