Sustainable fashion is often viewed as a luxury that only a select few can afford. Lucky for you, we have 10 amazingly affordable sustainable fashion brands to introduce you to today!
It is true that sustainably and ethically made garments usually come with a higher price tag (to accommodate for fair wages for workers and avoid destructive farming practices) – but not all sustainable garments cost hundreds of dollars. Some brands specialize in making sustainable fashion available to those who are on a budget.
Through their production cycles, they have several ways to make the price tag on their garments more accessible. Firstly, the use of recycled, upcycled or deadstock materials can save them on production costs. Secondly, the production of sustainable clothing is more minimal than the making of fast fashion garments, saving money on pesticides or harsh dyes.
Sustainable fashion pieces will still cost you more than a fast fashion garment no matter what. Why is that? To fully understand this issue, we would have to take a deep dive into fast fashion production cycles – but here’s the essence of the problem.
Fast fashion is driving the price of a garment to be incredibly low – to alienate competition. However, as a consequence, their clothing is poorly constructed and won’t last a long time. A sustainable fashion piece, on the other hand, is made with quality, rather than profit in mind. Because of that, ethically and sustainably made garments may be more expensive than fast fashion upfront, but you’ll save money in the long run, as you won’t have to replace them all the time!
Oddly enough, fast fashion makes a heck of a lot more *profits* than sustainable fashion – even with the price difference. When a company ensures that its garment workers are paid enough to feed themselves and their family, the price of the product goes up. The fast fashion industry pays its workers minimum wage or less (3 times less than a living wage) and yet still have room for a huge profit margin. Really makes you wonder – How many environmentally and socially tragic things are they pulling?
Sustainable fashion is not meant to be over consumed – it is meant to be chosen with mindfulness and be used for years and years (and years). When we invest in a sustainable closet – we are investing in a closet that works for us! The price per wear difference between sustainable fashion and fast fashion is also something to consider – If you purchase a sustainable item for $60 USD and wear it 30 times in a year, it will save you so much money compared to a $10 USD shirt that was destroyed after 4 wears in the washing machine.
Great question. Sustainable brands to offer too many crazy discounts like fast fashion brands, but being a conscious consumer (and knowing when to purchase items) will save you lots of money. Create a list of items that your wardrobe needs and then find sustainable brands that can fill those spots. Join their email list for a discount (usually 10-20%) and be patient for sales like holiday sales, off season sales, or just sales for things that are not selling as they had hoped. You can also search for the items you want secondhand first!
