When was the last time you thought about what’s in your clothes? We spend so much time reading food labels and avoiding harsh skincare products, but what about what’s touching our skin all day long?
Spoiler alert: Many fabrics are packed with chemicals that can be harmful to both you and the planet.
I have a bit of a history with synthetic fabrics, but it’s not a love story. I’ve had more allergic reactions to synthetic fabrics than I can count. Hives, redness, and itchy patches – yep, all courtesy of the chemicals lurking in those synthetic fibers.
But it doesn’t stop at hives. Some people can experience even more severe reactions. Think respiratory problems, headaches, dizziness, and even hormone disruption.
All from the clothes on your back. I mean, we all love fashion, but not when it turns us into medical case studies, right?

The reality is that synthetic fibers are chock full of chemicals. Think formaldehyde (used to prevent wrinkles), azo dyes (those vibrant colors), and phthalates (to make fabrics flexible), just to name a few.
So, what’s the safest alternative? Natural fibers! Non-toxic clothing materials like linen, hemp, and bamboo are grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and processed without harsh chemicals, meaning they’re less likely to trigger allergic reactions. Plus, they’re free from PFAS, the sneaky “forever chemicals.”
Natural fibers are not only kind to your skin but also to the planet. Organic cotton, for instance, is grown using natural methods that improve soil health and biodiversity.
Linen and hemp are sturdy and durable, often grown with minimal water and pesticides. Bamboo, when processed responsibly, is soft, breathable, and eco-friendly.

Toxic Clothing Fabrics to Avoid
PFAS
One of the most common harmful chemicals in clothing is PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances), a family of man-made chemicals often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily.
These are the same nasties found in non-stick pans and water-resistant clothing. While it might sound cool to have a jacket that repels water, the chemicals that make it happen are anything but PFAS that can leach into your skin, leading to a host of health issues.
PFAS in clothes can cause:
- Hormonal Issues: PFAS have been linked to hormone disruption, which can mess with your body’s natural functions. This can lead to problems like thyroid disorders and even impact fertility.
- Cancer: Long-term exposure to PFAS has been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, including kidney and testicular cancer. Not exactly the kind of baggage you want with your raincoat, right?
- Immune issues: Some studies suggest that PFAS can weaken your immune system, making it harder for your body to fight off infections and illnesses.
How to spot and avoid it:
Look for Keywords on Labels such as “Waterproof, Water-Resistant, Stain-Resistant, and Oil-Repellent”: These terms often signal that PFAS were used to treat the fabric. If a jacket promises to repel water like a superhero, there’s a good chance PFAS are involved.
Avoid Technical Performance Gear: Activewear and outdoor gear that boast moisture-wicking or dirt-repellent properties might also contain PFAS.
Choose brands that have Oeko-Tex or Bluesign Certifications: These certifications often indicate that the product is free from harmful chemicals, including PFAS. If you see these logos, you’re probably in the clear.
Natural Materials: Go for clothing and gear made from natural, untreated materials like organic cotton, wool, or hemp. These fabrics are naturally water-resistant to some degree without needing chemical treatments.
DIY Waterproofing: For outdoor gear, you can use natural waxes or non-toxic sprays to add water resistance without the need for PFAS.

Formaldehyde is often used in the textile industry to create that oh-so-convenient wrinkle-resistant finish. Who doesn’t love pulling a shirt out of the dryer that’s ready to wear without a date with the iron?
But here’s the really bad part: formaldehyde is also a known carcinogen. Yes, the same stuff used to preserve biology specimens is hanging out in your “no-iron” shirts.

Phthalates
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and are often found in printed designs on fabrics, faux leather, and even in the softening process of textiles.
Phthalates are used in clothing materials to make them more flexible and durable. Those bold, eye-catching graphics on your T-shirts? Phthalates are often used to help the print stick and stay flexible so it doesn’t crack when you stretch the fabric.
Love that chic, vegan leather jacket? Phthalates are added to PVC (the stuff that makes faux leather) to make it bendy and wearable without cracking.
Phthalates can also sneak into water-resistant clothing like rain jackets and boots, making the fabric flexible and less likely to get stiff when exposed to cold or wet conditions.

- Hormone Disruption: Phthalates are infamous for mimicking or interfering with human hormones, potentially leading to reproductive issues.
- Developmental Problems: Exposure, especially during pregnancy, can impact the development of the fetus.
- Allergic Reactions: These can trigger skin allergies and exacerbate conditions like eczema.
How to spot and avoid it:
Beware of Plasticky Prints: Those vibrant, plasticky prints on T-shirts and hoodies are often loaded with phthalates.
Choose Phthalate-Free Brands: Some brands explicitly state they avoid these chemicals—do a quick brand check before you buy.
Natural Prints: Opt for garments with water-based inks or natural dyes.
Azo Dyes
Azo dyes are synthetic colorants used to achieve bright, vibrant hues in fabrics. Whether it’s that neon pink top or the deep, rich blue of your jeans, azo dyes are behind those intense shades.
They’re cheap to produce and easy to apply to fabrics, which makes them a favorite for mass-produced clothing. This is why you often see them in fast fashion items that are all about affordability and trendiness.
However, under certain conditions, they can break down to form aromatic amines, some of which are carcinogenic.

It’s clothing made from materials that are free from toxic substances—like harmful dyes, synthetic finishes, and chemical treatments—that can be absorbed by your skin or inhaled as fumes.
These materials are gentle on your skin, won’t cause allergic reactions, and don’t come with hidden health risks.
What Non-Toxic Clothing Materials Have No PFAS?
Organic Cotton
First up, we have organic cotton. We all know by now that conventional cotton farming uses a lot of chemicals that can remain in the fabric and potentially cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers which means that it’s free from all harmful substances.
Because it’s free from toxic chemicals, organic cotton is less likely to cause skin allergies or irritations. It’s also breathable and soft, making it comfortable to wear and gentle on sensitive skin.
Linen
Next, there’s linen. Made from the flax plant, linen is incredibly breathable and lightweight, making it perfect for those hot summer days when you feel like you’re melting.

Now for the million-dollar question: How can you tell if your clothes are harboring hidden toxins?
